The shortcut does nothing, or the image only shows the desktop

Almost always the Screen Recording permission is missing. Without it macOS won’t show any app what is on the screen. Go through these in order:

Grant the permission. Open System Settings › Privacy & Security › Screen & System Audio Recording and turn on ScreenShotty.
Restart ScreenShotty. macOS only applies the permission after the app restarts. Quit it from the menu bar icon › Quit ScreenShotty, then open it again.
Check again after an update. Occasionally macOS resets the permission after an update. If ScreenShotty is in the list but switched off, turn it on and restart the app.
Is the shortcut taken? If another app uses the same key combination, the one that registered first wins. Change the shortcut under Settings › Shortcuts – or start a capture from the menu bar icon to test.

You can change or remove each one under Settings › Shortcuts, where you can also add one for “All Screens”. The menu bar icon additionally offers delayed captures – handy for menus that only open on click.

Selecting a region

After the shortcut the screen freezes and a crosshair with a magnifier appears.

Drag to select a region; the size is shown in pixels.
Click without dragging to capture the highlighted window.
Space switches between region and window. Holding it while dragging moves the selection.
← → ↑ ↓ move the pointer by one point, with ⇧ by ten. ↩ starts or finishes the selection.
esc or a right-click cancels.

After capturing

A menu with a preview appears at the pointer. Pick a destination with the mouse or a number key:

Want the same thing every time, for example every capture straight to the clipboard? Go to Settings › Destinations › Send to the selected destinations and turn on the ones you want.

The editor

Every tool has its own key. Set color, line width, font and shadow in the inspector on the right; the app remembers your choice per tool.

Double-click a text or speech bubble to edit its text.
Hold ⇧ while drawing: rectangles become squares, lines snap to 45° steps.
Arrow keys move the selection, ⌫ deletes it, ⌘ D duplicates it.
Crop: drag an area, then press ↩. esc cancels.
Rotate, resize, border, drop shadow and torn edge are in the Image menu.
Everything can be undone with ⌘ Z.

Saving

⌥ ⌘ S saves straight to your screenshot folder without asking – ~/Pictures/ScreenShotty by default. Set the folder, format and file name under Settings › Output.
⇧ ⌘ S asks for a location and format: PNG, JPEG, HEIC, TIFF or PDF.
Want to keep editing later? Choose “ScreenShotty Document” as the format. When you open it again, every annotation is still editable on its own. PNG and the other formats contain the finished image.
⇧ ⌘ C copies the annotated image to the clipboard.

There is no icon in the menu bar

ScreenShotty lives in the menu bar and has no Dock icon while no window is open. When the menu bar is full, the icon can disappear behind the camera notch of a MacBook. Open ScreenShotty again from the Applications folder: the settings window appears.

To have ScreenShotty ready after every restart: Settings › General › Launch at login.

What does ScreenShotty cost?

A one-time purchase – no subscription, no ads, no in-app purchases. Updates are included. On another Mac with the same Apple Account, download it again in the Mac App Store under your account › Purchased, at no extra cost.

Uninstalling

Quit ScreenShotty from the menu bar icon and drag the app from the Applications folder to the Trash. Your saved screenshots stay where they are. To remove the settings as well, also delete the folder ~/Library/Containers/net.stevenbohm.screenshotty.
